OPENING RECEPTION
Saturday November 2
5:00 - 7:00 pm

Sam Allerton Green is a landscape painter based in Providence, Rhode Island, whose work delves into the nuanced elements of New England’s diverse landscapes. With a Bachelor of Fine Arts from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a Master of Fine Arts from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, Sam has cultivated a unique artistic voice that merges vibrant abstraction with a grittier perspective.

Working primarily in oil, Sam’s paintings emphasize large shapes of color that capture both the serene and the overlooked elements of the landscape. He often focuses on the parts of the environment that the eye tends to overlook—the not-so-scenic details we quickly move past. By highlighting these less appreciated aspects, Sam invites viewers to slow down and engage with the richness of the landscape, encouraging a deeper appreciation for its complexities. His practice often takes him outdoors, where he paints en plein air in a variety of conditions, from the heat of the sun to the stillness of snow, and even under the night sky.

ARTIST BIO

Erica Driver is an artist based in rural Little Compton, Rhode Island. She is a lifelong creator with a love for drawing. She creates paintings using acrylic paint markers and ink wash on wood panels. Erica received her undergraduate degree in liberal arts from Harvard University. She credits her art foundation to passionate teachers and mentors through the years, as well as learning by osmosis during thousands of hours modeling at art schools while she was in college. Erica is inspired by the street artists of Providence, Rhode Island and Valencia, Spain, and the work of Niki de Saint Phalle and Antonio Gaudí.

ARTIST STATEMENT: WORKING SPACES

Working Spaces is an exploration and celebration of the places Rhode Islanders go to work. The paintings were created primarily onsite and en plein air. Erica thrives on the challenge of adapting to changes in the environment as people go about their workday. The light shifts. A plant in the greenhouse unfurls. Emergency vehicles depart and return, parking in a slightly different spot. Kegs in the brewery are moved, replaced by sacks of malt.

Erica is particularly drawn to visually complex environments—though she has come to realize that all workspaces are complex, if you examine them closely enough. She’s also discovered that while it’s the people who make the places, the places we work have a life of their own.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design is pleased to announce the opening of TRANSLATIONS on Saturday, October 19, 2024 from 5:00 - 7:00pm. This show features paintings by three artists: Wiley Holton, Karen Iglehart and Lorraine Mainelli. Each of these artists has a style that is very different from that of each other, which is how the title TRANSLATIONS came to be chosen for the exhibition. The differences in their work are what make this show extremely dynamic and thought provoking. All three of these artists are translating the three-dimensional world around them onto a two-dimensional picture plane, with wildly different results.

Jessica Hagen states, “This show is emblematic of why I love being in the arts. Each artist is coming to their own conclusions about how they see and experience the world, what’s important to them and what’s not. They are translating the stuff of their lives: their thoughts, ideas, and feelings, and putting the results out there for the world to see. Artists are truly among the bravest people in the world.”

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry. Located in the historic Point section of Newport, the gallery’s hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00 - 5:00 and Sunday 12:00 - 5:00.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design is pleased to announce the opening of Penny Ashford Photographs in the Sarah Langley Gallery at Hammetts Hotel on Saturday, September 7, 2024, from 5:00 - 7:00pm. This show marks Penny Ashford’s second solo show with Jessica Hagen at the hotel.

Penny Ashford is a photographer known for her fine art and documentary work, often focusing on environmental and social issues. Her portfolio is celebrated for its unique ability to capture both the aesthetic and emotional dimensions of her subjects. Ashford’s travels have profoundly influenced her photography, taking her to diverse locations around the globe, including the North Pole, Antarctica, Greenland, Iceland, Australia, and Africa. Each of these destinations has enriched her perspective and contributed to her distinctive style. Her recent journey to La Palma marked an exciting new chapter, highlighting her interest in astrophotography. La Palma is renowned for its clear, unpolluted skies. The island’s location in the Atlantic Ocean and its low levels of light pollution create ideal conditions for observing and photographing celestial events. Water, as a recurring theme in her work, continues to play a significant role, seamlessly integrating into her projects regardless of location, as evidenced in this show.

Jessica Hagen states, “I’m excited to be collaborating with Hammetts Hotel again and thrilled to be showing Penny’s incredible photography there for a second time. The hotel’s proximity to the water, which is so central to the artist’s work, makes it an especially perfect venue.”

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary art, including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry. Located in the historic Point section of Newport, the gallery’s summer hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00- 5:00 and Sunday 12:00- 5:00. The artist paints on site, setting her easel up on the vein of rocks known as Puddingstone a compressed volcanic quartz embedded in long granite slabs that are 250 million years old. Jessica Hagen states, “From Hanging Rock to Elephant Rock, Jill interprets the effects of light and climate upon this iconic piece of coastline for which Aquidneck Island is so loved. It is a beautiful exhibit of a very beautiful place.”

MEA DUKE: SPF

The gallery is pleased to welcome back Mea Duke for her second solo exhibition following her much-lauded sold out show in the summer of 2022. Mea Duke is a Rhode Island-based interdisciplinary artist who specializes in representational painting and printmaking. Duke’s interests come to the surface the more one uncovers the relationship between works within iconographic objects, their design, function, and materiality. Here, the line between “painting an object” and “painting as an object” is revealed. Rather than make this statement, Duke finds it more satisfying to point out these moments in iconic design language, time, and memory.

Duke’s first exhibition DON’T LOOK I’M CHANGING debuted in the summer of 2022 and completely sold out. SPF features new paintings, prints and sculpture that showcase Mea Duke’s sophisticated take on summers spent by the sea, using her signature technical prowess and creativity for which she is known. Jessica Hagen states, “From suntans to Sea & Ski, Mea’s upcoming exhibit is a high vibe ode to sun, salt, and sand. A show not to be missed.”

Duke holds her MFA from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts at Tufts University and her BFA from the Art Institute of Chicago and the University of Rhode Island. She has been an adjunct professor at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design and Montserrat College of Art, teaching fellow at SMFA at Tufts, and most recently a teaching assistant in printmaking, painting, and sculpture within the Art, Film and Visual Studies Department at Harvard University. Duke’s work has been exhibited in galleries throughout the Northeast, has been the recipient of numerous awards, and has been featured in several publications such as New American Paintings and Studio Visit Magazine among others.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design is pleased to announce the opening of Every Picture Tells a Story on September 23, 2023, from 5:00- 7:00pm. The show spotlights the paintings of Orlando Almanza, a Cuban artist living and working in the Pacific Northwest. The artist’s rich, narrative work came to the attention of Jessica Hagen in the fall of 2022 when he was working as the artist in residence at the Newport Art Museum. The artist will be teaching a workshop on visual story telling at the museum during his upcoming visit to Newport, as well as working with Conexcion Latina Newport on the first ever Festival Latino. (These two organizations can be contacted directly for all the details.) In addition to Orlando Almanza’s work, the show will also include paintings by Lorraine Mainelli, Greg Sampl and Tom Vieth. Each artist brings their unique story to the viewer through the use of different painting styles and subject matter. Jessica Hagen states, “This exhibition is visually rich and varied. All four artists are highly skilled and incredibly creative. Shown together, the work is super-charged by the contrasting styles of paint handling and expression.” Every Picture Tells a Story is on display through October 22, 2023.

ON VIEW SEPTEMBER 5, 2023: Jessica Hagen’s new exhibition CONFLUX

CONFLUX represents a guest curatorship by gallerist Jessica Hagen at Providence’s Dryden Gallery. Hagen established Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design in Newport, RI in 2005 and has focused on showing artwork that embraces quality, originality, and beauty. Her exhibition at Dryden Gallery features the paintings of two accomplished, mid-career American artists: Lloyd Martin and Stephen Niccolls. Martin is a Providence native and a graduate of the Rhode Island School of Design, while Niccolls hails from the Hudson Valley and received a BFA from the School of Fine Arts, Boston and MFA from UMass Amherst. The paintings of both artists are non-representational, with Lloyd Martin’s work often being compared to music. Art critic John Goodman wrote that the artist’s paintings "achieve a Mondrianesque climax of rhythm." Stephen Niccolls work arises from a fascination with structure. Niccolls asserts, “Each painting establishes its own unique context, or world. It may have elements that evoke still-life, landscape, or portrait painting, or some combination of any of these, or perhaps something else entirely.” Jessica Hagen states, “Both artists are masters of color and composition. It is an exciting pairing with over thirty works on display, many of them large-scale. Dryden Gallery’s expansive exhibition space makes this an ideal place to launch this show.” CONFLUX will be on view through December 2, 2023, with an Artist Reception on Thursday October 12th from 5:30 - 8:00pm. Dryden Gallery is located at 1350 Mineral Spring Ave, North Providence, RI with hours Monday-Saturday from 9:00 - 5:00.

Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary art including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, and jewelry. Jeff Fischer is a sculptor based in Newport, RI, with over five decades of shaping objects in wood. Having been long fascinated with birds, he is currently inspired to attempt to capture the grace and elegance to be found in the forms of these beautiful creatures.  His works have been shown at the Newport Art Museum, Wickford Art Association, South County Art Association, and others.

ARTIST HUNT SLONEM TO EXHIBIT AT JESSICA HAGEN IN NEWPORT, RI

Jessica Hagen is pleased to welcome back the well known American artist Hunt Slonem for his fourth solo exhibition at her gallery in Newport, Rhode Island. Hunt Slonem’s Solo Exhibition opens on June 24, 2023, and will feature the artist’s colorful, expressionist paintings of bunnies, birds and butterflies, as well as a beautiful selection of flower paintings in honor of The Newport Flower Show. Hunt Slonem’s work is in over 250 museum collections including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, as well as many illustrious private collections. Hunt Slonem has received extensive media attention: CBS Sunday Morning, The New York Times, ArtNews and Architectural Digest have all profiled the artist not only for his artwork, but also for his collection of historic homes that he has restored, decorated and filled with works of art. Gallerist Jessica Hagen states, “I’m so pleased to be hosting our fourth solo exhibition of Hunt Slonem’s work. It is the year of the rabbit in Chinese astrology, which is what first inspired Hunt’s iconic bunny paintings, making this show especially auspicious!”

Located in the historic Point section of Newport, Jessica Hagen Fine Art + Design was founded in 2005 and features contemporary American art including painting, sculpture, photography, ceramics, textiles, furniture, and jewelry. The gallery features original works of art created by living American artists from throughout the northeast and beyond. Styles range from realism to abstractionism, with a focus on quality, originality, and beauty. The gallery’s hours are Wednesday through Saturday 11:00- 5:00 and Sunday 12:00- 5:00 as well as by appointment.
